The main reason women skip Zumba isn’t fitness. It’s the fear of being the only one who doesn’t know the steps.
Here’s the honest answer. In a room of 20 women, several are new, and the confident ones have simply been coming longer. Everyone faces the instructor. Nobody has a view of you.
Zumba classes at Al Nabaah Ladies Fitness are women-only, taught by female instructors, and included in every membership at no extra cost. Your first trial session is free.
This post walks through what happens in a class from start to finish, what to wear, and the 5 things that stop beginners from trying.

What Zumba is
Zumba is dance-based fitness set to Latin and international music.. Instead of counting reps, you follow choreography: merengue, salsa, cumbia, reggaeton.
You move continuously for most of an hour and your heart rate stays up the whole time. Because you’re following music rather than watching a clock, the hour goes quickly.
For women who find the treadmill boring, this is usually the thing that finally sticks.
What happens in your first Zumba class
Before it starts. Arrive 10 minutes early. Tell the instructor it’s your first class. Stand in the middle or back rows where you can see her and the women around you.
First 5 to 10 minutes. Warm-up. Slower songs, simple steps. This is where you pick up the basic movements that repeat through the rest of the class.
The middle 30 to 40 minutes. Songs alternate between fast tracks and slower recovery tracks. Each song has its own routine. The instructor demonstrates, you follow. Steps repeat within each song, so by the second chorus you usually have it.
Last 5 to 10 minutes. Cool down and stretch. Slower music, breathing.
Then it’s finished. Most Zumba classes run 45 to 60 minutes.
What to wear to a Zumba class
Shoes. Trainers with a smooth sole. Running shoes with heavy grip can catch on the floor during turns. Cross-trainers work best.
Clothes. Whatever you can move in comfortably. In a women-only room with female instructors, that’s entirely your choice.
Water. Bring a full bottle. You’ll need it.
A small towel.
That’s everything. No equipment to buy.
5 things beginners worry about before their first Zumba class
“I have no rhythm.” Zumba doesn’t grade your dancing. Keep moving and do the footwork. Ignore the arms until you’re ready. Half a routine gives you the same cardio benefit as a perfect one.
“I’ll be the oldest or least fit person there.” Classes at a ladies gym in Sharjah usually run across a wide age range and a wide fitness range.. There’s no typical Zumba body. If you’re completely new to training, start with the first week plan.
“Everyone will look at me.” The whole room faces the instructor. You’ll be behind or beside them.
“I won’t keep up.” March in place whenever you need to. Instructors expect it and it’s completely normal. Your fitness catches up within 3 or 4 classes.
“I’ll get the steps wrong.” You will. So does everyone, every class, including the regulars.
Zumba classes compared with Yoga and Pilates
All 3 are included in your membership, so you can try each one.
| Best for | Intensity | Good first choice if | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Zumba | Cardio, fat loss, energy | High | You want the hour to go fast |
| Yoga | Flexibility, stress, breathing | Low to moderate | You’ve never exercised before |
| Pilates | Core strength, posture, back | Moderate | You sit at a desk all day |
Many members do a combination. Zumba for cardio, Pilates for core, Yoga for recovery.
If you’re picking one to start with, pick the one you’d look forward to. That’s the one you’ll keep attending.
Why Zumba works as a starting point
It’s social. A class has a fixed time, the same faces and a shared hour. That builds attendance in a way solo cardio doesn’t.
It removes the decision. You don’t plan a workout. You show up and follow.
It builds base fitness fast. After a month of 2 classes a week, most people find stairs easier and sleep better. That base makes strength training and everything else easier to start.
The general guidance for adults is 150 minutes of moderate activity a week.. Two Zumba classes covers most of it.
