Most women who quit the gym quit in the first 3 weeks. The training is rarely the reason. They walk in, don’t know what to do, feel awkward, and stop coming.
So this is a plan for that problem. A day-by-day plan for your first 7 days.
Everything here assumes you’ve never trained before, and that you’re starting at a women-only gym where nobody is watching you learn.
Key facts at a glance
- 3 sessions in your first week, with rest days between
- Nothing to buy beyond trainers and a water bottle
- Your first trial session is free
- Women-only at every hour, with certified female trainers
- Membership from AED 150 a month, all classes included. See the full price list
- Open 6 AM to midnight Saturday to Thursday, 2 PM to midnight Friday
Day 0: before your first gym session
Sort out 3 things. Nothing else.
Shoes. Any trainers with a flat, supportive sole. Nothing special to buy.
A water bottle. Fill it before you leave home.
A time. Pick the actual hour you’ll go, and pick one that fits the life you already have. If you’re not a morning person, a 6 AM plan fails by Thursday. If your evenings disappear to family, use the morning. At a ladies gym in Sharjah open 18 hours a day, there’s a slot that fits.
That’s your whole preparation. Don’t buy new clothes. Don’t research programmes for a week. Don’t wait until Monday.
Day 1: get through the door
Your goal is to turn up. That’s the entire goal.
Ask at reception for a floor induction, a walk-through of the equipment. A good gym does this without you asking twice. You want to know where the changing rooms are, where the cardio machines are, where the weights are, and what each machine does.
Then walk on the treadmill for 20 minutes and go home.
You’ll feel like you didn’t do enough. You did. You proved you can get there, which is the only skill that matters in week 1.
Day 2: rest
Rest properly. Beginners who train 7 days straight are too sore to move by day 4 and don’t come back.
Day 3: learn 2 machines
Ask a trainer to show you 2 machines, 1 for legs and 1 for upper body. Do 2 sets of 10 on each with a light weight. Then 15 minutes of cardio.
Total time in the gym: 30 minutes.
Ask questions while you’re there. That’s what the trainers are for, and asking on day 3 saves you months of doing exercises slightly wrong.
Day 4: rest, or try a class
If you feel good, this is a good day for a class. Zumba, Yoga or Pilates. A class solves the “what do I do now” problem completely, because someone else decides for a whole hour.
If you’re sore, rest. Soreness in the first week is normal and it settles within 2 to 3 weeks.
Day 5: repeat day 3
Same 2 machines. Same weight, or slightly heavier if 10 reps felt easy. Same cardio.
Repetition isn’t boring in week 1. It’s how the movements stop feeling awkward.
Day 6: rest
Day 7: book week 2
Sit down and pick your 3 days for next week. Put them in your phone calendar as fixed appointments.
That’s week 1 finished. 3 sessions, no injuries, no burnout, and a habit that’s started.
What nobody tells you about the gym for beginners
You don’t need to be fit before you join. The gym is where you get fit. Turning up unfit is the correct way to use it.
3 sessions a week beats 6. A 6-session plan lasts 11 days. A 3-session plan lasts a year. The one you keep wins.
Strength training is for women too. Lifting weights makes you stronger, protects your bones, improves your posture and changes your body shape more than cardio alone. The general guidance for adults is muscle-strengthening work on at least 2 days a week.
The scale is a poor measure in month 1. Your weight moves for a dozen reasons including water, food and hormones. Use how your clothes fit, how much energy you have, and whether the stairs feel easier.
Everyone was new once. Including every confident-looking woman on the floor.
What to wear as a gym beginner
Trainers with a flat sole. Clothes you can move in. A water bottle and a small towel.
In a women-only gym with no male members or staff, what you wear is entirely your choice. That’s the practical difference that makes consistent training possible for a lot of women in Sharjah.
Nothing else is needed in week 1. Gloves, belts, trackers and supplements are decisions for month 3, if ever.
Why the room matters more than the equipment
For many women in Sharjah, the deciding factor is whether she feels comfortable using the equipment.
In a women-only gym there are no men on the floor and no male trainers. You’re not adjusting what you’re wearing. You’re not waiting for the weights area to clear. You can concentrate on the session.
That comfort turns a 1-month membership into a 1-year habit.
